Nomen Novum vs. Nicki Minaj (feat. 2 Chainz)

She really is in the trap. Is — IS — in the trap.”“

Image Earlier today, Nomen Novum (David Norbery) offered up a remix of Nicki Minaj (feat. 2 Chainz)’s “Beez in The Trap,” which transforms the cold, minimal synth plod of the original number into something of a breezy summer jam.

What’s most noteworthy about Norbery’s remix is that he’s added an element of warmth to the song via some mildly jazzy hints, and the hand-made aesthetic that has become such a defining part of Nomen Novum’s sound. He’s also done the songs a good bit of justice by chopping 2 Chainz’s most obnoxious lines down to the bare minimum, and in the process actually redeeming the College Park rapper who’s formerly known as Tity Boi — yes, there was a time when he thought it was a good idea to call himself Tity boi.

At any rate the remix pushes the song beyond the scope of its original dance floor/pop/hip-hop form, and by adding his stylistic tweaks, Norbery has even uncovered something of a new angle. “I liked this song in particular because I originally thought it was this spooky ping-pong rap song about bees. In fact, it is Nicki herself who is in the trap. Having listened to it a hundred or so times now, with actual chords and melodies behind it, I feel like I can identify with her a lot better. She really is in the trap. Is — IS — in the trap.”
